"Jagvar" (Jagvar)

I was having this discussion with a coworker this morning. He seemed to think that it was the C3, and I've always believed it was the C4. Can anyone support the argument for either?

in my mind, 74+ C3's would be the least desirable. Tough call because the C4 isn't a great car either. Unless it was done by a tuner, like Callaway. Give me a speedster any day

You can't just do a generation, you have to get to specific years. The late 70s/early 80s non pace car C3 vette? Pretty worthless. Early C4? Pretty worthless. C4 ZR1? C4 Grand Sport? C4 LT4? C4 pace car? All those are worthwhile and have some decent value already. C3 LT-1? 68-72 stingrays? Those are some serious cash. The rest are all up in the air for now.

The 1968-72 C3 is very collectible. '73 and '74 drop off from there (each being progressively not as good), and the '75-'82 blech.

I'd have to go with C4. Not to amazing. Not new enough to be wanted. Not old enough to be "Classic". It's kind of that middle ground that no one likes.

I would say c4, it was ugly.

Later C3s were crap due to GM not able to work out how to make a powerful engine and still meet new emissions requirements. The C4 was still not great, and many can be found very cheap, but the late 70s/early 80s C3s were just the worst.

Which C3 was your co-worker speaking of?
This one:
Or this one:
Two totally different things in my book. I'd say the C4 is more collectable than the later C3s, but less so than the early ones.

I'd say it depends on how hold he is when hes looking to get a Corvette. The early C3's had great drive train options but became a bit anemic later on. The C4 finally got an LT1 in 1992. I'd say the C4 is definitely the least-collectible Corvette if we're talking about a base model (so not the GS or ZR-1 models as they're quite collectible).

I always thought the C4 was pretty *yawns* borring. I like the C3. By this I mean appearance only.

Is anyone collecting C5's right now? Everyone who went from a c5 to a c6 is now getting into the c7's, which means all the people who picked up a c5 when the c6 came out would finally be moving into c6's. Z06 c5's are going for cheap right now. There are a lot of collectible c4's and c3's, but what c5 besides the Z06 would be collectible?

Generation? C4. Only the ZR-1 and run-out models are collectible within the foreseeable future.
Specific Years? The 1980-82 C3. This era saw 305 V8 Corvettes, 180hp Corvettes, and 1982 was automatic-only.
The idea that the whole C3 generation was tarnished by the 1980-82s is a bit silly, though. The L88, ZL-1, and original ZR-1 were high points for the Corvette.
In fact, it wasn't until 2006 that a Corvette (the C6 Z06) would pass the '68-69 L88's power figures.

Late 70's.
There's really no question. Top horsepower out of their V8's doesn't even hit 200 and they are kind of huge in Vette terms.

late c3's were slow blobs. At least if the C4 was lacking in styling it could drive well (and power).

As well as the tremendous lack of chassis development, owing to the fact GM's beancounters didn't care for the car's handling.

It's clearly the C4. I've referred to it here before as the Jar Jar Binx of Corvettes. So awful that it almost ruined a successful franchise. At the time, I don't think it was horrible but it hasn't aged well by any metric.

But they're so much prettier than C4s.

This is true. Like I said, this era of the Corvette was a grey area. Arguments can be made for both the C3 and the C4 being the least collectible.

I'd rather be able to break past 200 hp.
The C4's are solid performers, and you can make them unbelievable performers with relative ease.
I think at the end of the C3 life span they got bloated and blobby. Now these on the other hand are a very different story, they are beautiful and I love them:

Meh, I have to give you that.
Especially because both generations had a reason to say "Meh" to THEM.

personally it would be the C5 to me it is the ugliest Vette. It was the reason I grew up thinking the Corvette was a lame car the only your grampa actually liked.
That being said I would LOVE a C7 in lime rock green, w black wheels, and silver racing stripes.

Even if you showed a non enthusiast those two pictures they would say those are two different cars. The mid-late 70's was a bad time for the American auto industry as a whole. The Vette suffered too. and in my book it's just now returning to it's former glory.

Yeah, while I love my dad's '69, it drives like a truck.
A very fast, loud, low truck.

i'd say C4. even when compared to late-model C3's (i'll forgive all the haters out there), C4's just bring lower numbers comparatively on even the nicest examples. the 80's-futurist styling of the C4's just hasn't come around yet.
and collectibility-wise, the C3's may not be as strong money as their early brethren, but they are still fun and attractive (especially when compared to anything else of the time). plus, tons of aftermarket options to help bring the muscle back...
